I have been thinking for quite a while, “what genre would be the best to classify my book?” Well, I think I’ve found the answer.
Thanks to a review thread I participate in on Goodreads, I heard mention of the New Adult genre; for books that are similar to Young Adult, but are perhaps that bit darker or graphic, or concentrate on a point in life that comes after the teenage years but before feeling like a true adult.
It seems to fit pretty perfectly really. As the protagonist in Between the Lines has just turned twenty-one, this is the point in his life where he’s left the teenage years behind, but isn’t quite an adult. All the issues he will be facing will be questioning his choices and the route to adulthood he is taking, just as life does to each and every one of us.
With this in mind, I am increasing the depth of his back-story and bringing more life into the other characters because of it. There is a possibility that Between the Lines will be published by the end of this year; but I’ll keep you all posted on that one.
Writing aside, I’m still really enjoying my Open University course, and looking forward to competing in NaNoWriMo again in November.
